About the Book

Professionals providing group treatment will find the Group Drug Counseling model easy to use with clients with substance-related problems. It can be modified, expanded, or adapted to outpatient dual-diagnosis clients with chemical dependency and psychiatric illness; as well as clients in residential rehabilitation, partially hospitalized, or receiving outpatient treatment.

Group Drug Counseling details a two-phase group approach that has been used with hundreds of clients at five different clinics. Phase one outlines 12 weekly group sessions structured around specific recovery issues that clients should address - including understanding addiction and the recovery process, as well as people, places, and things and relationships. Also provided for are self-help groups; establishing a support system; managing feelings; coping with shame and guilt; warning signs of a relapse; coping with high-risk situations; and maintaining recovery. Phase two involves 12-week problem-solving groups that continue to cover group members’ specific problems and concerns such as dealing with feelings, developing social support, maintaining healthy relationships, and preventing relapses.

Participant's become involved in each session using their own workbooks. In doing so, the workbook reinforces their newly learned skills.

Editorial Reviews

“This manual represents the best combination of good recovery and good science. The authors know how to present recovery to chemically dependent individuals. We use this manual in our treatment programs and I wholeheartedly endorse it.”  –Roger D. Weiss, M.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School; Clinical Director, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Program, McLean Hospital

“This well-written treatment manual describes a model of group counseling developed for professionals who work with people with substance abuse disorders. It is both readily adaptable to clinical practice and easy to follow. It has been tested in a large clinical study of cocaine addiction and found to be as effective as several intensive individual psychotherapies. A ‘must read’ for addiction counselors and their supervisors.”  –Michael E. Thase, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry; Chief, Division of Research, Adult Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; Author; Researcher

“We have used this group counseling manual in research studies and clinical programs with many addicted clients. It covers the ‘nuts and bolts’ issues of recovery in a systematic, yet flexible manner. This group model can be used in inpatient, partial hospital, intensive outpatient and aftercare programs.”  –George Woody, M.D., Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; and Director, Delaware Valley Node of Clinical Trials Network

“We have used this manual in our intensive outpatient program for many years. It provides an excellent curriculum to teach patients about recovery. The patient recovery guide helps group members relate to the material we teach in a personal way.”  –Bill Spencer, M.Ed., Therapist
