This counseling manual describes an
integrated approach for treating substance use and psychiatric
disorders. Dual Disorders Recovery Counseling (DDRC) integrates
empirical, clinical and self-help literature, as well as the
extensive experiences of the authors who have developed and
managed dual disorders treatment programs for almost 15 years. It
addresses assessment of dual disorders, motivation and adherence
issues, supervision of clinicians, and the application of DDRC to
individual, family and group sessions. Different types of group
treatment are discussion, and psychoeducational group curricula
are provided on 44 group topics (eg., dual disorders, denial,
specific substances, coping with anxiety, boredom, anger or
depression, sharing positive feelings, financial issues in
recovery, family issues in recovery and relapse warning signs). A
companion interactive workbook Dual Disorders Workbook: Recovery
Strategies for Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders is
available for clients.
